THE FIRST LEG OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CIRCUIT OF THE PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE AT MARBLEHEAD

August 2016

We are now approaching the official start of the American circuit of the period yachts of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. The first event is at Marblehead, with the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta: one of the world’s classic period yachting events, which attracts more than 50 boats to the starting line.

Already many yachts have entered, including Neith, a Marconi Yawl of 1907 designed by Nathanael Herreshoff for his personal physician, and the legendary Dorade of 1930, which through its many victories ushered Olin Stephens into the Olympus of world-renowned designers.

Also eagerly awaited is the Sonder Class Tilly XV, straight from Germany. The Sonder Class is a special sailing category which has strong ties with Marblehead. The class was founded in 1906 with the aim of encouraging the sport of sailing, and historic events were held first at Kiel and then at Marblehead with the Eastern Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club, representing the United States, and the Kiel Yacht Club, representing Germany.

Who created this Class? No lesser characters than President Teddy Roosevelt and Kaiser Wilhelm II. There are many tales to be told about the boats which take part each year in the races of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge: associated with these beautiful period yachts are countless stories, secrets and amazing legends.
