CLASSIC SAILING YACHTS CONVERGE ON CANNES FOR THE FINAL BATTLE FOR THE 2015 PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE

September 2015

Eighty or so extraordinary sailing yachts, some launched as far back to the late 19th century, will converge on Cannes to do battle between September 22 and 26 in the 37th Régates Royales, the ninth and final event on the 2015 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge calendar.

The Régates Royales name was coined in 1929 in acknowledgement of the large number of royal competitors and yachts attracted to the French regatta even in its earliest days. Today the event provides the concluding round of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge season and is part of the Mediterranean Circuit which also numbers Les Voiles d’Antibes, the Argentario Sailing Week and the Copa del Rey in Minorca.  Although flanked by Panerai regattas in North America, the Caribbean and on the Isle of Wight, the Mediterranean Circuit alone attracted over 250 craft from more than 10 different nations this year, confirming the PCYC’s status as the leading international circuit for vintage and classic sailing yachts.

All of the races lined up for Cannes take place in the stretch of sea between the mainland coast and Les Ìles de Lérins in the Golfe de la Napoule. The points clocked up by the winners of the individual races will prove decisive in the awarding of the season trophies for the Vintage, Classic and Spirit of Tradition classes. The trophies will be presented at a prize-giving ceremony on Saturday, September 26, at the Vieux Port where the boats will be tied up.

The final round of the 2015 Circuit looks set to be an unmissable celebration of the maritime values and naval traditions fostered and passed on by Officine Panerai in tribute to its own historic links to the sea. Last but very far from least, also present at Cannes will be the 1936 Bermudan ketch Eilean, purchased and restored by Officine Panerai and now an ambassador for the Florentine luxury sports watchmaker at the  most prestigious international classic sailing events on the world’s most beautiful seas.
