Fifty legendary classic and vintage boats are to meet in Mahón for the ninth Copa del Rey Panerai Trophy

August 2012

From 28th August when the inspections and registering of boats begins to 1st September when the trophies offered by Officine Panerai are presented to the winners of the three-day competition, the waters facing the Club Marítimo de Mahón, the co-organiser of the regatta together with the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, are to become the showground for these naval gems of the highest level in classic yachting.

By the end of the official registration period, there were 45 classic and vintage boats from 9 countries:  Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Bermuda, Malta and Russia on the list of registered vessels.

Among these, a dozen are new to this ninth year of the Copa del Rey-Panerai Trophy, one of the most popular events in the classic yachting calendar in the Mediterranean and part of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Circuit sponsored by Officine Panerai.

Each of these legendary yachts has its own history and has undergone a meticulous restoration process to bring back all of the splendour of its fine materials.

Most of these historic boats are loyal to the Panerai Trophy and some have not missed a single contest of the nine held on the island. This is the case of the auric schooner ‘Freda’, built in 1978 using plans from 1835 by the American designer Murray Peterson at the Valencia shipyard Calafate. ‘Eilean’, the 1936 Bermudan ketch restored by Officine Panerai, started in competition in 2010 and has not missed a year in Minorca since.

The Olympic representative of the fleet is ‘Bonafide’, the only boat built in 1898 after the Godinet Rule to have survived and that forms part of the history of French yachting after winning the gold medal in its class during the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris.

‘Hispania’, commissioned in the early 20th Century by King Alfonso XIII to the naval architects William Fife and a recent example of perfect restoration is, together with the auric schooner ‘Sadko’, one of the two representatives of the Isla Ebusitana Foundation based in Port Sherry and devoted to the preservation and restoration of historic vessels.

These are but a few examples of the high level of vessels present in Mahón, as the organising clubs indicate. “The ninth Copa del Rey-Panerai Trophy continues to prove its worth with the great fleet of classic vessels that are to meet in Mahón next week.  This is the main Minorcan regatta and, as well as the organising clubs, the institutions and our sponsor Officine Panerai, the entire island is getting reading to welcome the crews of these vessels that are a reflection of naval history over the past century. We would like to invite the locals and visitors to the island to come to the floating exhibition for an insight into these legendary yachts”.
