Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge: Mariska, Duet, Sagittarius and Savannah triumph at Antibes

June 2013

The first round of the Mediterranean Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge drew to a very satisfying close on June 2nd at Antibes on the Côte d’Azur after four days of spectacular racing featuring 65 of the most world’s beautiful classic and vintage yachts.

Four races in all were competed during the 18th Les Voiles d’Antibes which delivered consistently sunny, fine weather and moderate 6 to 10 knot winds from the southerly quadrants as the historic fleet did battle on mixed triangle, coastal and upwind-downwind courses of between 10 and 16 miles.

The four winning yachts, each of which received an Officine Panerai watch, were the 1908 gaff cutter Mariska in the Big Boat category, the 1926 gaff cutter Duet in the Vintage, the 1971 Bermudan sloop Sagittarius in the Classic, and the 1997 Bermudan sloop Savannah in the Spirit of Tradition. All three also took first place in their respective sub-categories: Mariska in the Big Boats, Duet in the Vintage Cutter – Under 23-Metres, Sagittarius in the Classic Racer and the 27-metre J-Class Savannah in the Spirit of Tradition category. In the year of her launch, Savannah also won the Best Sailing Yacht prize awarded by Showboats International and the Super Yacht Society.

In the largest of the sub-categories, the Classic Marconi, the 1952 Italian cutter Ea successfully fended off her two nearest rivals Arcadia and Maria Giovanna II. The British yacht Helen K33 took the honours in the Vintage Marconi – Under 15-Metres class while overall victory in the Vintage Marconi – 15 to 23-Metres class was taken by the 1925 yacht Leonore, already well known to fans of the circuit as she won the Vintage category in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in 2012. Last but very far from least, the top prize in the Super Tofinou category went to Speed Bird, a fibreglass daysailer built in 2010 by French yard Latitude 46.

Favourable weather conditions and the exceptionally high standard of the fleet delivered a truly exhilarating start to the season that bodes well indeed for the ninth edition of Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. The Mediterranean Circuit continues with the following stages:

  • Argentario Sailing Week (Italy, 13th-16th June)

  • Vele d’Epoca, Naples (Italy, 26th-30th June)

  • X Copa del Rey (Minorca, Spain, 27th-31st August)

  • Régates Royales (Cannes, Frances, 24th-28th September).
