SAIL NANTUCKET REGATTA & OPERA HOUSE CUP: FROM 19 TO 21 AUGUST THE REGATTAS AT NANTUCKET ARE “CLASSIC”

August 2016

Three days of exciting challenges will take place on the waters of Nantucket from 19 to 21 August, all strictly limited to classic yachts. On 19 August the Sail Nantucket Regatta will start and it will be followed by the Opera House Cup on 21 August.

This is a decisive moment in the classification of the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge: after the first event at Marblehead, the teams will now be trying to reach the highest step of the podium before the final leg at Newport.

Among the entries are many magnificent yachts, preserved like jewels by their owners who are the proud custodians of tradition and history.

There will be the legendary Columbia (USA-16), the first 12-Metre SI to win the Americas Cup in 1958 at Newport. It triumphed in a spectacular challenge against the yacht Sceptre of the Royal Yacht Squadron (12-Metre K-17). Among the period yachts to be seen will be Marilee, launched in 1926, a splendid example of the NY40 yacht class designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff. Only 14 NY 40 yachts were constructed and of these just four have survived: Marilee as mentioned, Chinook, Rowdy and Rugosa.

The only question remaining about the spectacle of Nantucket is, who will win?
