MARBLEHEAD’S CORINTHIAN CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA KICKS OFF THE MULTIPLE PCYC REGATTA SERIES, WITH THE 2-DAY MARBLEHEAD RACE

New York, July 2018 – Steeped in tradition and history, classic yacht sailing draws sailors and spectators alike on the New England coastline every summer as the 2018 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge – North American Circuit kicks off its annual classic sailing circuit in Marblehead, MA. This year, which is Panerai’s 13th year of hosting classic yacht regattas in North America, the 2-day multiple race is expected to draw over 200 different yachts from around the world to compete for the coveted Panerai trophies.

Since 2005, Officine Panerai has been the title sponsor of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge – a global series that has grown to 10 classic yachting regattas, and pays tribute to the Brand’s historic ties to the sea.

Panerai’s passion for the sea dates back to its early military history in the Mediterranean. In early 1936, the commandos of the Italian Navy tested the first-ever military diving watch, which was produced by Officine Panerai. Since then, the high-end Italian-designed, Swiss-made watchmaker has been associated with the sea, and admired for the luminous and innovative nautical instruments and timepieces the company has been producing for more than a century.

For 2018, the international circuit is comprised of a 4-part Mediterranean Circuit, a 5-part North American Circuit and a single classic yacht racing event in the Isle of Wight, UK.

The 2018 PCYC North American Circuit consists of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 11th – 12th, Marblehead, MA), the Sail Nantucket Regatta (August 17th – 18th), the Opera House Cup (August 19th, Nantucket, MA), Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta (August 24th, Bristol, MA) and the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta (August 25th – 26th, Newport, RI).

In North America, since 2006, the captains and crews of some of the world’s most historic classic sailing vessels have been gathering in New England to enjoy the Panerai competitions and camaraderie. Each of these magnificent regattas typically attract more than 50 classic sailing vessels from around the world, with prizes awarded to individual class winners to the best performing yacht of each regatta. This year, the full North America Circuit, will comprise a total five regattas with seven possible races that will be scored to determine the Series winner in both the Vintage and Grand Prix classes. Vintage classes include Grand Classics, Corinthian Classic and Classic Day Racers; Grand Prix classes include Spirit of Tradition yachts, enhanced vintage yachts and Day Racers.
